溶解度随时纤维素中羟基被乙氧基取代程度而不同。含47%乙氧基的产品软化点140℃。溶于乙酸乙酯、乙酸丁酯、苯、甲苯、二甲苯、丙酮、甲醇、乙醇、丁醇、1,2-二氯乙烷、四氯化碳等多数有机物，能与树脂、油蜡和增塑剂混溶，对碱和稀酸不起作用，不溶于水。相对密度1.07～1.18；折光率1.47；乙基纤维素是不溶于水而溶于有机溶剂的非离子型纤维素醚。具有不易燃烧；热稳定性好，有优良的热塑性；对日光不变色；柔韧性好；介电性好；有优良的耐碱性，耐弱酸性；防老化性能好；耐盐、耐寒性、耐吸湿性好；对化学品稳定，长期储存不变质；可与许多树脂配伍，与所有的增塑剂有良好的配伍性；在强碱性环境和受热条件下易变色的优点。
